Carpet-covered plywood construction is lighter than laminated hardboard and quieter in a vehicle, and it takes scuffs without showing them, which is why it has stayed the standard for regional sound companies and mobile rigs. Rack rails accept standard 19-inch equipment on 10-32 screws.
